Photographing toddlers is probably one of the hardest jobs. We want to capture their adorable faces and unique personality through our camera lens, but they can put up quite some work for us to get the perfect pictures!
I know it’s not easy. I have two toddlers myself! They’ve helped me refine my photography skills and learn the best ways to handle toddlers during a photo shoot.
So, I decided to put together the top 5 tips that will help you take amazing photos of toddlers without wasting any time.
I did this entire session of my little ones on a small green area right in front of my building in just 20 minutes. And I want to show you that you can do that, too!
This is huge! I consider this to be the most important step of a toddler photo session. This will make the day of the shoot flow smoothly without any surprises. You’ll know exactly what is going to happen. You can plan what to wear, what location to use, and what the best time for the shoot is. Planning everything in advance will also take away a big chunk of the stress during the shoot.
Don’t try to do it all at once. The more complicated the photo shoot is, the more challenges you’ll stumble upon. I know that you have a certain vision in place and you want the photo shoot to be perfect. But, remember, you can do one outfit and one location each time. This way, the photo session will be more enjoyable and you won’t have a reason to get mad at your camera or phone.

This is probably the easiest step, but sometimes we tend to forget it. This photoshoot is not just about getting some amazing pictures of your little one. It’s also about creating memories and having fun along the way. So, if your toddler likes music, play some. If your little one likes certain toys, bring them. There’s no better way to capture your child’s unique expression and personality than recreating the best possible environment for the photo shoot. If they feel comfortable and have fun during the shoot, you’ll be able to capture the most precious moments.
There are a number of reasons I like to photograph my toddlers early in the morning. First, and most importantly, my kids are very well rested at the time. With enough sleep and a full tummy, they’re eager to go out and play. Besides that, around 9 a.m. the lighting is perfect for a photo session.
You should try keeping your photo shoot between 20 and 30 minutes. After that, it’s almost guaranteed that they will realize what’s going on and start sabotaging your perfect session. But the good news is that if you followed my advice #1, 20 minutes should be plenty of time for you to take the best photos of your toddler.
I hope these tips will be very helpful for your next session. For all of us, it’s very important to capture all the precious moments of our little family members. With these tips, you’ll be able to make the best out of the short period of time you have for the perfect photo shoot.
